Recently, participants of the Philippine Experience Program (PEP) Caraga got to experience the Agusan River up close on a cruise held on October 28. It was more than just a leisurely ride; it was a journey through the heart of Butuan's history and culture.

As the boat glided along the river's calm waters, guests were treated to sights that spoke volumes about the region's storied past. Among the highlights were replicas of the legendary Balangay Boat, which represents the ancient seafaring skills of Butuanon ancestors who navigated the seas long before modern ships came into the picture. The Balangay, often referred to as the "Butuan Boat," symbolizes Butuan’s role as an early hub of trade and maritime activity.

The river cruise also passed by the Banza Church Ruins, an evocative site that serves as a reminder of the city’s Spanish colonial past. Once the oldest stone church in Mindanao, the Banza Church was destroyed by Moro pirates in the 18th century, leaving only its bell tower standing as a silent witness to the region's turbulent history.
