The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has confirmed the safety of all thirteen Filipino crew members and one Ukrainian seaman following an attack by Houthi rebels on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. The vessel, identified as a bulk carrier, encountered the assault while navigating the Yemeni coast near Hodeidah late yesterday afternoon (Manila time).

According to reports from the shipping company’s local manning agency (LMA), the vessel sustained damage from four missiles launched by the Houthi insurgents. Despite the ordeal, the vessel remains operational and is steadfastly continuing its voyage towards its next port of call.

The DMW, in close coordination with the shipping and manning agencies, is diligently monitoring the safety and well-being of the Filipino seafarers onboard. Additionally, efforts are underway to provide assistance to the families of the crew members, ensuring they receive the support they need during this challenging time.

In response to the incident, the manning agency promptly notified both the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), an attached agency of the DMW. This collaborative approach underscores the government's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Filipino workers abroad and ensuring swift action in times of crisis.
