Five Marines Confirmed Dead In CH-53E Helicopter Crash At Marine Corps Air Station Miramar

Major General Michael J. Borgschulte, the commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, confirmed the tragic loss of five Marines from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16. The Marines lost their lives in a CH-53E helicopter crash that occurred on the night of February 6, 2024, during a routine training flight.

Expressing deep sorrow and profound sadness, Maj. Gen. Borgschulte stated, "It is with a heavy heart that I share the loss of five outstanding Marines from 3d Marine Aircraft Wing and the 'Flying Tigers.' These pilots and crew members were serving a calling greater than self and were proud to do so. We will forever be grateful for their call to duty and selfless service."

As per military protocol, the identities of the deceased service members will not be disclosed until 24 hours after all next-of-kin notifications have been completed.

Efforts are underway to recover the remains of the fallen Marines and the equipment involved in the crash. An official investigation into the incident has also been initiated to determine the cause of the tragic event.

Acknowledging the inherent risks of military service, Maj. Gen. Borgschulte emphasized the unwavering commitment of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing to support the families, friends, and fellow service members of the fallen Marines during this difficult time.
