The Department of Justice (DOJ) said Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr., a former Negros Oriental congressman and designated terrorist, was arrested in Dili, East Timor.

The arrest took place around 4:00 pm Thursday while Teves was playing golf at the Top Golf Driving Range and Bar.

Teves Jr. is facing multiple murder charges related to the killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and five others in March 2023.

The successful arrest was made possible through the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies, including the International Police (INTERPOL) National Central Bureau (NCB) in Dili, in coordination with the East Timorese Police.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla emphasized the significance of international cooperation in apprehending individuals like Teves. He stated, "Today’s apprehension of Teves is a testament to the power of international cooperation. It sends a clear message that no terrorist can evade justice and that nations stand united in safeguarding the safety and security of their citizens."

Teves, who has been the subject of a Red Notice, is currently under the custody of the Timorese Police while arrangements for his extradition to the Philippines are being made by NCB-Dili in coordination with the teams from NCB-Manila and the Dili Philippine Embassy.

Secretary Remulla stressed the importance of Teves facing trial without conditions, urging him to "face the courts squarely."

The DOJ has assured the public of regular updates on Teves' return to the Philippines, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring justice prevails.

Secretary Remulla also expressed gratitude to the Philippine law enforcement team and international partners for their relentless efforts in combating lawlessness and maintaining peace.
