Goodbye, Aghon, Enteng, And Company: PAGASA Retires 8 Destructive Storm Names
FILE
Looks like we won’t be hearing the names Aghon, Enteng, Julian, Kristine, Leon, Nika, Ofel, and Pepito in future storm bulletins. PAGASA just announced that these eight tropical cyclone names have officially been retired after their devastating impacts on the country in 2024.

During a press conference at the 57th Session of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee in Pasay City last February 17, DOST-PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel T. Servando confirmed the decommissioning. This marks 2024 as the year with the most number of storm names retired since PAGASA’s current naming system began in 2001!

Why retire storm names?

A storm name gets "retired" if it causes at least 300 deaths or racks up ₱1 billion in damages to homes, agriculture, and infrastructure—based on reports from the Office of Civil Defense. However, due to the back-to-back typhoons late last year and their combined destruction, PAGASA decided to retire all names of storms that played a significant role in the damage.

What happens next?

With these names officially out of the rotation, PAGASA will introduce new ones starting January 1, 2028. So, instead of Aghon, Enteng, and the rest, expect to hear Amuyao, Edring, Josefa, Kidul, Lekep, Nanolay, Onos, and Puwok in future storm seasons.
