Heads Up, Negros! Increased Activity Alert At Kanlaon Volcano
Mt. Kanlaon
PHIVOLCS just released a new advisory on Kanlaon Volcano, and it's definitely something to stay updated on. Since midnight, the Kanlaon Volcano Network has recorded 64 volcanic earthquakes on the western side of the volcano, with depths ranging from 2 to 8 kilometers. These "volcano-tectonic" or VT earthquakes, which are caused by rock fractures, suggest that magma might be on the move beneath the surface. So yes, things are definitely heating up a bit inside the mountain!

To add to the mix, sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from Kanlaon’s summit have shot up to 7,087 tonnes per day as of yesterday. That's way above the usual levels, even more so since a spike back in June. All of this points to continued activity, and PHIVOLCS is keeping an eye out for any signs that might mean an increase from the current Alert Level 2.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Stay Clear of the Permanent Danger Zone: If you’re anywhere near Kanlaon, please avoid the four-kilometer-radius around the volcano to stay safe from potential rockfalls, pyroclastic flows, and other volcanic hazards.

2. Protect Yourself from Ashfall: If there's any ash in the air, cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth or dust mask to protect your lungs. Keep an eye on the wind direction and adjust accordingly.

3. Keep an Ear Out for Civil Aviation Warnings: If you know anyone flying near the volcano, PHIVOLCS has advised against it due to the potential ash and debris that could harm aircraft.

4. Watch for Lahars During Rain: Those living near river systems on the south and west sides of Kanlaon should be cautious if it rains heavily, as there’s a chance for lahars or muddy flows that could be dangerous.

PHIVOLCS is monitoring the situation closely and promises to keep everyone informed of any changes. So stay tuned, stay safe, and keep an eye on local updates.
