Heartbreaking Incident At San Juan Pound: PAWS And Local Government Speak Out
Viral photos in Facebook
In a deeply saddening and distressing turn of events, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has expressed outrage over the drowning of numerous animals at the San Juan City Pound during Typhoon Carina. The incident, which has been widely shared on social media, shows a heartbreaking scene of a lone surviving dog standing atop submerged cages, with no pound employees in sight attempting to save the animals.

PAWS is standing in solidarity with the animal lovers who are devastated by the video. The organization highlighted that their 2012 typhoon advisory, which advised releasing animals if evacuation wasn't possible, was not heeded. This advisory wasn't just for individual pet owners but for all facilities housing animals, including city pounds, shelters, breeders, clinics, and boarding and training facilities.

PAWS emphasized that pound personnel should have at least released the animals, giving them a chance to survive. They called on San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora to hold those responsible accountable and to extend aid to private rescuers who took in the surviving animals.

On the other hand, the San Juan City Legal Department has also issued a strong statement regarding the tragic incident. They expressed profound regret and anger, acknowledging the disturbing photos and videos that surfaced online, which revealed the heartbreaking neglect. The city has launched a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and ensure they face the full extent of the law.

Mayor Zamora and the local government are committed to transparency in the investigation and have assured the public that such lapses in animal care will not be tolerated. They condemned the neglect in the strongest terms and reaffirmed their commitment to the humane treatment and protection of animals.

Both PAWS and the San Juan LGU are united in their determination to prevent such a tragedy from happening again, ensuring that all animals, whether impounded or pets, receive the care and protection they deserve.
