The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) issued a public advisory today, revealing that the body of Killua, a dog recently found in a dog slaughter area in Sta Cruz, Bato, Camarines Sur, has tested positive for rabies. This development has prompted urgent calls for those who may have had contact with the dog to seek immediate post-exposure shots.

Killua's owner, Vina Arazas, who discovered the bloodied body of her pet, is among those urged to undergo precautionary treatment. However, PAWS acknowledges the limitations of the test results, considering that Killua's body had been buried for five days before testing and may have been contaminated in the vicinity of other slaughtered stray dogs.

In accordance with the Bureau of Animal Industry's Manual of Procedure for Rabies, animals suspected of rabies are typically observed for fourteen days or, in highly suspected cases, euthanized with the preservation of the head for testing.

Despite the testing challenges, PAWS remains steadfast in pursuing legal action against Anthony Solares for animal cruelty. CCTV footage allegedly shows Solares chasing and provoking Killua from under a car before fatally beating the dog.

PAWS intends to file criminal charges against Solares for violating the Anti-Rabies Act (RA 9482) due to his alleged involvement in the dog meat trade. After killing Killua, Solares reportedly transported the dog to a known slaughterhouse and dog meat cooking area linked to his carinderia business.

PAWS emphasizes the potential health risks posed by consuming dogs from areas associated with the dog meat trade and urges anyone who may have consumed such meat to seek post-exposure shots immediately. The organization condemns not only the cruelty of dog meat traders but also the significant threat they pose to public health.
