Amidst the looming threat of the restless Kanlaon Volcano, the municipality of La Castellana finds itself grappling with a more immediate danger: overflowing lahar. Mayor Alme Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan wasted no time in addressing the situation as she personally inspected the inundated Tamburong Creek in Purok Tamburong, Brgy. Biak na Bato.

The sight of the road submerged under layers of lahar prompted an urgent response from the local authorities. In collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) stationed in Binalbagan, efforts were swiftly mobilized to clear the affected area. Heavy equipment and manpower were deployed to ensure the safety of the community and restore access to vital routes.

Meanwhile, the Kanlaon Volcano, situated in close proximity to La Castellana, continued to exhibit signs of heightened unrest. According to the latest 24-hour observation report, seismic activity recorded 27 volcanic earthquakes within the specified timeframe. Additionally, a substantial release of sulfur dioxide, measured at 3464 tonnes per day on June 5, 2024, underscored the escalating activity within the volcano.

Visible manifestations of the unrest included a towering plume reaching 1500 meters in height, characterized by voluminous emissions drifting in multiple directions, particularly towards the northwest, southeast, and southwest. Ground deformation further signaled the inflation of the volcano edifice, indicating significant pressure buildup beneath the surface.

In response to the escalating unrest, authorities reiterated the importance of adhering to safety protocols. Entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) remains strictly prohibited, along with any aerial activity near the volcano. Residents and visitors are reminded of the potential hazards associated with sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, emphasizing the paramount importance of vigilance and preparedness in the face of natural calamities.
