Lino Cayetano has finally spoken up and put all the rumors to rest: he’s not vying for the mayoral seat in Taguig in the upcoming 2025 elections. The former mayor took to social media to share his thoughts and address speculations that have been circulating lately.

“Gusto ko diretsuhin at sagutin kayo ng diretso na hindi ho, ako tatakbo bilang Mayor ng Lungsod ng Taguig,” Cayetano said in a video he posted online. He wanted to deliver the message directly to his constituents to clear up any misconceptions.

In his video message, Cayetano reflected on his long journey in public service, starting from the time he joined his father’s rounds back in 1985, when he was only seven years old. He reminisced about the many roles he has taken over the years, from being a Barangay Captain to serving as Congressman and Mayor of Taguig.

“When I served as your mayor from 2019, it was one of the toughest times in government because of the pandemic,” Cayetano recalled. “Yet, it was also a great privilege to be part of an administration that became a model for unity and bayanihan.” He emphasized that Taguig became a benchmark for its effective response during the health crisis, from testing and vaccine distribution to the provision of aid.

While he could have run for two more terms—one in 2022 and another in 2025—Cayetano explained that he chose to step aside in 2022 to support Mayor Lani Cayetano’s candidacy. “I wanted to ensure that our group remained united. I’ve always believed that serving the public doesn’t have to be tied to a title,” he added.

This year, with the 2025 elections on the horizon, Lino Cayetano’s name has been tossed around again, with many asking if he’s planning a comeback as mayor. However, he was quick to put these rumors to bed.

“I’m not running for Mayor of Taguig in 2025. But let me be clear, this doesn’t mean I’m stepping away from serving our city,” he clarified. “Whether as a kagawad, councilor, or in any other capacity, I’m still here to serve. Serving our city is in the heart, not in the title.”

Cayetano’s message was all about unity and cooperation, urging everyone in Taguig—especially politicians—to work together for the greater good of the city and its people. Though he’s not eyeing the mayoral position this time around, he hinted that he’s not closing the door on other opportunities to serve.
