Man Sentenced To 15 Years For Brutal Attack On Filipina Woman In NYC

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr., announced the 15-year state prison sentencing of Brandon Elliot, 43, for the vicious assault on then 65-year-old Vilma Kari, a Filipina American, on a Midtown sidewalk in 2021.
Elliot pleaded guilty to Assault in the First Degree as a Hate Crime and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree last December.
District Attorney Bragg emphasized the racially motivated nature of the attack, stating, "Brandon Elliot assaulted a 65-year-old woman because of her Filipino descent." The sentencing aims to send a strong message against racial violence, seeking full accountability.
The assault, which occurred on March 29, 2021, left Kari with a fractured pelvis and various contusions. Elliot kicked and stomped on her head and body, threatening a Good Samaritan with a knife before fleeing.
Arrested two days later with the help of a Crime Stoppers tip, Elliot now faces 15 years in state prison, including 5 years of post-release supervision.
Assistant D.A.s Courtney Razner and John Fuller handled the prosecution, with support from various units. Detective Michael Rodriguez and the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force were thanked by D.A. Bragg for their assistance.
During the sentencing on February 21, Wednesday, Elliot offered an apology to Vilma Kari, now 68, expressing remorse for the brutal attack.
