In a historic moment for Filipino cinema, the Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) has officially opened its overseas edition at the iconic TCL Chinese Theaters on Hollywood Boulevard. The MIFF, showcasing the best of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), is set to captivate global audiences with a stellar lineup of ten official entries.

These films, separate and distinct from the MMFF awards held last December 2023, will undergo a fresh evaluation by a panel of distinguished Filipino American jurors. The MIFF awards, to be presented at a star-studded closing night awards gala at the Directors Guild of America on Sunset Boulevard, include categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Special Jury Prize, and the Audience Award.

Among the notable recognitions is the Best Picture award, providing the winner with a unique opportunity to produce a US-based feature film co-produced by Birns & Sawyer. This groundbreaking prize, valued at $200,000, includes $100,000 worth of camera rental equipment supported by industry partners such as Atlas Lens Co., BlackOps Studios Asia, CMB Film Services, Inc., and Myriad Entertainment USA.

The MIFF awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay will also include the latest version of Final Draft Software valued at $250, courtesy of the partnership with Birns & Sawyer.

Atty. Don Artes, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Acting Chairman and concurrent MMFF Overall Chairman, expressed confidence in MIFF's ability to elevate the quality of Filipino films on the global stage. "I believe this MIFF will further validate the fact that Filipino films are truly exceptional and world-class," he stated.

The esteemed MIFF jurors, including industry leaders like Maricel Jamora, Marie Acevedo, Leah Anova, Reggie Lee, David Maquiling, and Sallee Montano, bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the evaluation process.

The 10 films to be featured at MIFF are: "Becky and Badette," "Broken Heart’s Trip," "Family of Two (A Mother and Son Story)," "Firefly," "GomBurZa," "(K)Ampon," "Mallari," "Penduko," "Rewind," and "When I Met You in Tokyo."

As MIFF screenings run through February 1, audiences will also have the chance to vote for the Audience Award. Additionally, the prestigious Monty Manibog Lifetime Achievement Award is set to be bestowed upon acclaimed actress Hilda Koronel.

The MIFF is poised to be a pivotal event in promoting Filipino films abroad and celebrating the rich talent within the industry.
