President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan in Malacañang during a courtesy call on Monday. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and discussing key regional issues.

During the event, President Marcos expressed gratitude for the visit, emphasizing the importance of productive exchanges between the Philippines and Malaysia amid ASEAN engagements. He reiterated the Philippines' commitment to maintaining close communication with Malaysia on current developments.

Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Philippines date back to 1959, with significant milestones including the establishment of the Philippine Consulate in Kuala Lumpur in 1964.

President Marcos highlighted his recent state visit to Malaysia in July 2023, where he met with Malaysia's King and engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation across politics, security, economy, and people-to-people ties. Earlier, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visited the Philippines in March 2023, fostering cordial discussions on various mutual interests.

Malaysia has played a pivotal role in promoting peace in Muslim Mindanao, supporting the region's progress under the Bangsamoro Organic Law. The upcoming local elections in 2025 mark another milestone in the region's journey towards self-governance.

In terms of economic ties, bilateral trade between the Philippines and Malaysia reached US$8.1 billion in 2023, with Malaysia ranking as the Philippines' 9th major trading partner. The Philippines recorded a trade deficit with Malaysia for the past five years, emphasizing the need for balanced economic cooperation.

Furthermore, Malaysia ranked 16th among the Philippines' top investment partners in 2023, with significant approved investments totaling US$13.17 million. The tourism sector also saw growth, with Malaysian tourist arrivals to the Philippines increasing significantly in recent years.

Currently, an estimated 950,043 Filipinos reside in Malaysia, underscoring the strong people-to-people connections between the two nations.

The discussions between President Marcos and Foreign Minister Haji Hasan underscored the ongoing commitment to deepen cooperation across various sectors, reflecting a shared commitment to regional stability and prosperity.
