It looks like Mary Jane Veloso’s case is back in the spotlight, with the Indonesian government now considering transferring her to a Philippine prison. This news comes straight from a press release dated November 11 by Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction.

The possibility was reportedly discussed during a meeting between Indonesia’s minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Philippine Ambassador Gina Alagon Jamoralin. While no concrete decisions have been announced yet, this discussion marks a potentially significant step forward in Veloso’s long-standing legal battle.

For those who need a quick refresher, Veloso is a Filipino worker who has been on Indonesia’s death row for over a decade, following her conviction for drug trafficking—a criminal act she insists she was duped into.

The talks follow a promise made earlier this year. Back in January 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. secured a commitment from Indonesian President Joko Widodo to reexamine Veloso's case. This latest update could be a sign that Indonesia is taking steps in that direction.

For Veloso’s family and supporters, this news might offer a glimmer of hope. A transfer to a Philippine prison could bring her closer to home and under more familiar legal systems. Whether this move will happen—and what it might mean for Veloso’s fight for justice—remains to be seen.
