Starting on May 2, local government units (LGUs) across Metro Manila will shift their work hours to 7am-4pm, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). This move, initiated by the Metropolitan Manila Council (MMC), aims to address the severe traffic congestion on the roads.

According to MMC President and San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora, the decision to delay the implementation to May 2 instead of April 15 is to provide the public with ample time to adjust to the new schedule. With over 112,000 LGU employees in the National Capital Region (NCR), the MMC expresses confidence that the revised work hours will contribute to alleviating traffic in Metro Manila.

MMDA Chairman Don Artes emphasized that the MMDA will align with the MMC in enforcing the 7am-4pm work schedule. Both agencies will also intensify efforts to clear designated lanes for public utility vehicles, further aiding in traffic decongestion.

While the exact reduction in traffic volume during rush hours remains uncertain, the MMDA estimates that implementing the new work schedule for LGUs could potentially decrease the number of passengers by around 500,000 during peak hours in Metro Manila. Nonetheless, the MMDA urges motorists to practice courtesy, discipline, and adherence to traffic laws amidst the changes.
