MMDA Defends EDSA-Philam Ramp Amid Controversy

The recent uproar over the accessibility ramp at the EDSA-Philam Busway station in Quezon City has sparked debates about inclusivity in urban infrastructure. In response to the viral photo showing the ramp's steep incline, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) clarified that the design adheres to height restrictions imposed by the MRT, making it challenging to align with the footbridge elevator.

"While it's not a perfect solution, especially for wheelchair users, the ramp offers significant assistance to senior citizens, pregnant women, and other persons with disabilities (PWDs) who find stairs difficult to navigate," explained an MMDA spokesperson.

To address concerns, the MMDA plans to deploy personnel to assist PWDs struggling with the ramp ascent. Compared to the viral image, the agency emphasized that the incline is manageable for walking and was installed due to space constraints. Without it, the elevator couldn't be integrated into the structure, compromising convenience for busway commuters.

The issue underscores ongoing challenges in balancing accessibility with urban space limitations. Despite criticisms, the MMDA asserts that the ramp represents a step towards improving accessibility, albeit with room for further refinement in future infrastructure projects.
