In a bid to address safety concerns and alleviate traffic congestion, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has greenlighted a resolution prohibiting the use of electric vehicles (e-bikes and e-trikes), tricycles, pedicabs, pushcarts, and kuligligs on major thoroughfares in Metro Manila.

MMDA Regulation No. 24-022 series of 2024 outlines the prohibition, which will be enforced on key roads under the MMDA's jurisdiction. Notable roads affected include EDSA, Roxas Boulevard, Taft Avenue, and Quezon Avenue, among others.

MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes stressed the necessity of regulation, citing the growing number of e-vehicles and their association with traffic congestion and road accidents. Fines of P2500 will be imposed on violators, with driver's licenses required for those operating electric-powered vehicles. Failure to present a valid license may result in vehicle impoundment.

Concerned about the safety of all road users, Artes emphasized that the regulation doesn't aim to ban e-bikes and e-trikes but seeks to regulate their usage. Last year, the MMDA recorded 554 road crash incidents involving e-vehicles, prompting the need for immediate regulatory measures.

The regulation is slated for implementation in April after an extensive information and awareness campaign. Additionally, each Metro Manila local government unit will formulate ordinances for secondary and inner roads within their jurisdiction to complement the MMDA's efforts.

San Juan City Mayor and MMC President Francis Zamora assured a unified approach among NCR local chief executives to prevent confusion surrounding the enforcement of the regulation. The move has garnered support from Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval, emphasizing the need for effective implementation.
