National Privacy Commission Updates Public On Recent Data Breach Notifications

In response to growing concerns over reported data breaches, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) has provided an update regarding notifications received from several personal information controllers.
Robinsons Land and Toyota are among the entities that have notified the NPC of data breaches recently. Robinsons Land reported a breach on June 1, 2024, while Toyota notified the commission of a breach on May 14, 2024. Both incidents are currently under evaluation by the NPC.
In addition to these corporate breaches, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has reported a total of six data breach notifications in May 2024, highlighting a broader spectrum of data security incidents affecting various sectors.
As of the latest update at 7:25 AM today, the NPC has not received any official notification regarding a data breach involving S&R.
Under current regulations, companies and individuals processing personal data are required to notify affected data subjects individually and report to the NPC via the Data Breach Notification Management System (DBNMS) within 72 hours of discovering a breach. This stringent protocol aims to mitigate the impact on data subjects and uphold privacy standards.
The NPC emphasized its commitment to addressing data breaches seriously and assured the public of active monitoring to safeguard the security and privacy of affected individuals. Data subjects who suspect they may have been impacted by any breach are encouraged to contact the data protection officers of the respective companies and report incidents to the NPC promptly.
The NPC's Compliance and Monitoring Division remains vigilant in ensuring compliance with data protection regulations and is dedicated to resolving breaches swiftly and effectively.
