The National Bureau of Investigation's Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD) apprehended three individuals suspected of orchestrating a series of cyber attacks targeting private and government websites, banks, and social media accounts.

The arrests followed a meticulous investigation into multiple unauthorized access incidents reported across various sectors. NBI-CCD operatives tracked the activities of the alleged hackers, known by aliases such as 'Kangkong', 'Mirasol', 'Sibat', 'Ricardo Redoble', and 'Lulu'.

Through monitoring online activities and leveraging informant leads, investigators gathered crucial evidence linking the suspects to the cyber intrusions.

The breakthrough came on June 14, 2024, when initial contact with the suspects was established through an informant. Subsequently, on June 17, 2024, one of the suspects, 'Kangkong', shared a compressed file containing sensitive data from BELO's database, followed by hacked Facebook accounts on June 19, 2024. These actions indicated successful unauthorized access to private databases.

The operation culminated in a dramatic arrest at a hotel in Manila, where NBI-CCD operatives executed a hot pursuit and apprehended 'Kangkong' and another suspect known as 'Illusion'. Upon seizing their phones, investigators discovered scripts and databases allegedly obtained from various local government and government unit websites, alongside credentials of Facebook users. Notably, 'Illusion's' phone contained data pertaining to hacked accounts from major Philippine banks.

The suspects were promptly transported to the NBI-CCD office in Quezon City for processing. They are facing charges under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, including Illegal Access and Misuse of Device, as well as violations of the Data Privacy Act of 2012 for Unauthorized Access or Intentional Breach.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the suspects are affiliated with two prominent hacking groups, Philippine Lulzec and Globalsec, underscoring the breadth and severity of their alleged cyber activities.

The NBI-CCD emphasized the significance of the arrests in safeguarding digital infrastructure and protecting sensitive information from malicious exploitation. Authorities continue to investigate further implications of the cyber intrusions, working closely with affected organizations to mitigate risks and strengthen cybersecurity measures nationwide.
