The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is ramping up its probe into a controversial live stream press conference involving Vice President Sara Duterte. NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed that subpoenas will also be issued to participants who either asked questions or played active roles during the virtual event.

According to Santiago, the investigation revealed that over 20 individuals joined the said press conference, raising the stakes for those involved.

Meanwhile, Vice President Duterte’s legal counsel has formally requested a rescheduling of her appearance in response to the NBI’s subpoena. In a letter addressed to NBI Director Santiago and another official, Duterte’s camp cited her conflicting commitments, particularly her involvement in the House of Representatives’ ongoing inquiry into the Office of the Vice President’s (OVP) and the Department of Education’s (DepEd) fund utilization.

The letter also highlighted due process concerns, asking for copies of the complaint and any other relevant documents that initiated the investigation. Additionally, they requested a list of questions to ensure the Vice President can adequately prepare for her participation.

Amid the developments, Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa admitted he has no idea where the Vice President is currently. However, he clarified that this does not mean Duterte is evading the investigation, echoing the sentiments of her legal team.

While the investigation into alleged grave threats and violations of cybercrime and anti-terrorism laws unfolds, all eyes are now on how the NBI will handle the subpoenas and the Vice President’s request for due process.
