New Guidelines For Toll Expressways: What You Need To Know About The Latest Changes
FILE
Starting August 31, 2024, motorists using toll expressways will need to pay closer attention to the newly revised guidelines issued by the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB). The recently signed Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2024-001 aims to smoothen traffic flow at toll plazas by cracking down on those who misuse the dedicated Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lanes.

The new guidelines specifically target motorists who try to enter ETC lanes without a valid ETC device or with insufficient load. Believe it or not, these erring motorists, who make up about 9% of expressway users, are often responsible for causing frustrating delays and long queues. And while they’re holding things up, the majority of drivers—around 91%—are patiently waiting, despite following the rules and having their ETC devices ready to go.

The TRB's goal with this new policy is clear: to create a faster, smoother experience for everyone using the toll expressways. By enforcing stricter penalties for violations, they're hoping to save everyone time, money, and a lot of unnecessary stress.

In the coming days, expect more details and advisories from the TRB. These will cover the responsibilities of everyone involved—from toll operators and RFID service providers to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the motorists themselves.

So, if you’re a regular toll expressway user, it’s time to ensure your ETC device is in good working order and that your account is always loaded. Keep an eye out for the upcoming information campaigns and feel free to reach out to the TRB if you have any questions or suggestions.
