'No Politics, Just Duty': PNP Chief Marbil Defends Cases Against VP Duterte, Others

Philippine National Police Chief General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil laid down the law—literally and figuratively. Amid speculation surrounding the cases filed against Vice President Sara Duterte and others, Gen. Marbil clarified that this was far from a political maneuver. Instead, he emphasized, it’s about sticking to the PNP’s constitutional mandate to uphold the rule of law.

"The PNP remains committed to its mandate to enforce the law without fear or favor. The filing of cases against any individual, regardless of status or political affiliation, is a reflection of our duty to the Constitution and the Filipino people," he declared.

And he didn’t stop there. Gen. Marbil got real about the consequences of hesitation, saying that failure to act could lead to accusations of bias—or even worse, fear.

"If we do not file cases against those accused, what will people say? Takot ang pulis, pangmahirap lang ang pangil ng batas. We cannot allow such perceptions to take root. Our duty is to apply the law to everyone, regardless of their standing, because justice is not selective," he explained.

With a nod to past criticisms, like the “tokhang” controversies, the PNP Chief underlined the lessons learned: selective justice erodes trust. He was adamant that history would not repeat itself under his leadership.

This isn’t about political sides, he insisted. It’s about fairness, accountability, and upholding a system that works for all Filipinos.

"Our laws must be observed, obeyed, and upheld. This is our sworn duty as law enforcers. It is not about politics, but about ensuring accountability under the legal framework we all agreed to as a democratic society," Gen. Marbil added.

He even quoted the age-old legal principle, dura lex, sed lex—the law may be harsh, but it is the law—to drive home the point that the PNP’s impartiality isn’t just talk.

"It is this principle that guides us in our work. As law enforcers, we cannot choose whom to apply the law to or make exceptions based on affiliations or relationships. Our mandate is to protect and serve all people equally, without prejudice or discrimination," Gen. Marbil stressed.

Wrapping up, he called for public trust and cooperation, reassuring everyone that due process and fairness are top priorities. “The rule of law is the foundation of a just and peaceful society,” he reminded.
