In a fiery address that set the tone for the 2025 budget deliberations, Speaker of the House Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez delivered a strong message to public officials on Monday: there will be no place for hypocrisy, evasion, or the misuse of public funds in the House of Representatives.

As he opened the plenary discussions on the proposed P6.352-trillion national budget, Romualdez made it clear that the House would be taking a hardline stance on those who claim accountability while sidestepping their own wrongdoings.

“We cannot ignore the reality that there are those who seek to undermine our work — critics who speak of accountability while conveniently ignoring their own misuse of public funds,” Romualdez said, highlighting the importance of leading by example in the fight for transparency.

His message was loud and clear: “This chamber will not tolerate hypocrisy. We won’t stand idly by in the face of blatant disregard for public trust,” he declared, calling out those who point fingers while hiding their own transgressions. “In Congress, everyone will go through the proper process, and no one will escape accountability,” he added in Filipino.

Romualdez emphasized that the House has always upheld transparency, ensuring that every government expenditure is thoroughly examined and used in alignment with the country’s priorities. He underscored that public funds are meant to serve the people—not to line the pockets of the few.

“The money of the people is not for personal gain. It is our duty to ensure that every peso is used for the welfare of our countrymen,” Romualdez stressed.

He assured the public that the House would remain unwavering in its commitment to fiscal responsibility and protecting taxpayers’ money, emphasizing that no individual or special interest group would receive undue consideration.

“This House answers to no one but the people,” Romualdez declared. “We will stand firm against pressure or influence, and we will guard every peso as if it were our own.”

As the plenary debates on the 2025 budget unfold, Romualdez urged his fellow lawmakers to work with both urgency and integrity, reminding them that they are the stewards of the nation’s purse and the people’s trust. "Every peso in this budget carries the sweat and sacrifice of millions of Filipinos," he said, reiterating that public funds must be spent wisely and with full accountability.

Romualdez’s closing words were a rallying call for responsible governance and economic growth, pushing for a brighter future for the Philippines. “Together, we will deliver a budget that serves the best interest of the people and contributes to the realization of the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028,” he concluded.

The House now faces the task of ensuring the nation’s goals are met and that every Filipino benefits from the proposed 2025 budget, as Romualdez reinforced the importance of swift, transparent action.
