President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has solidified diplomatic relations with Australia, underscoring the enduring friendship between the two nations during his state visit from February 28-29. The visit, marked by discussions and agreements, reaffirms Australia as one of the Philippines' closest allies.

In his arrival statement, President Marcos expressed gratitude for Australia's unwavering support, stating, "Australia remains, and will continue to be, one of our closest friends. In the spirit of bayanihan and mateship, we shall forge ahead in fully maximizing the potentials and gains from this Strategic Partnership between our two forward-looking, law-abiding maritime states."

The state visit, upon the invitation of Governor-General David Hurley, was deemed a significant step in realizing opportunities under the framework of the Strategic Partnership established during Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's visit to the Philippines in September last year.

President Marcos highlighted the increased tempo in bilateral engagements, particularly in defense and security, expressing gratitude for Australia's support in the South China Sea issue. Addressing the Australian Parliament, he emphasized the role of both countries in upholding the rules-based international order amid global geopolitical complexities.

"As democratic maritime nations, access to the global commons such as the oceans and seas must be ensured and safeguarded," President Marcos asserted, emphasizing the Philippines' commitment to regional peace and harmony.

The President also underscored the importance of a mutually-beneficial economic relationship with Australia, acknowledging the long-standing people-to-people ties between the two nations. During a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, discussions centered on trade, investment, and security cooperation.

President Marcos reported the signing of three agreements covering maritime domain issues, cyber and critical technology, and effective implementation of competition laws and policies. He expressed gratitude to Australian legislators for their instrumental support in developing an enabling policy environment for the continuous improvement of bilateral relations.

The state visit concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering a robust partnership, reflecting the shared values and goals of the Philippines and Australia in the ever-changing global landscape.
