President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed heartfelt condolences to Japan on Tuesday after it was struck by a powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake on New Year's Day.

Assuring the public, he emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of Filipinos residing in Japan.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Japan on New Year’s Day. We are in close collaboration with the Japanese government to secure the welfare of our kababayans, who thankfully remain unharmed,” Marcos stated in a released statement.

Furthermore, President Marcos extended an offer of assistance to Japan and emphasized the Philippines' readiness to provide support in the face of shared climate challenges within the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The Philippine Embassy in Japan confirmed that no Filipino nationals were killed or injured during the earthquake. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is actively monitoring the situation of Filipino workers in Japan, with a particular focus on Ishikawa and Toyama Prefectures.

According to DMW OIC Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac, there are a total of 1,194 Filipinos living in the two prefectures, with 469 in Ishikawa and 725 in Toyama.

Approximately 90 percent of these Filipino workers are engaged in the manufacturing, welding, and carpentry sectors, while around 10 percent serve as caregivers.

Cacdac assured that financial assistance would be provided to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) whose employment has been suspended or ceased due to the earthquake.

The earthquake, with its epicenter in Japan's central Ishikawa prefecture, resulted in casualties, injuries, and left thousands of households without electricity.

The Japan Meteorological Agency promptly issued a tsunami warning along the western coastal regions.

Although initial reports indicated the first waves hitting the coast just over 10 minutes later, all tsunami advisories were later lifted by Japanese authorities.
