In a bid to counter the cancellation of classes due to scorching temperatures exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has advocated for the restoration of the old school calendar, potentially as early as the next academic year.

Speaking at the Government-Owned or -Controlled Corporations (GOCCs) Day in Pasay City, President Marcos disclosed his directive to Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte to devise a comprehensive plan for the transition.

President Marcos emphasized the urgency of the matter, citing the increasing frequency of class cancellations and postponements due to the relentless heatwave. He stressed the necessity of swift action, noting minimal objections to the proposal.

Highlighting the current reliance on online classes in many parts of the country to shield students from the oppressive heat, President Marcos asserted that reverting to the old school calendar would be a more favorable option for students' well-being.
