President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to undertake a significant state visit to Vietnam from January 29 to 30, 2024, at the invitation of Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong. This marks President Marcos's first official visit to Vietnam since taking office in 2022 and serves as the inaugural outbound state visit of the year.

Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza announced during a press briefing in Malacañang that the President, accompanied by First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, will engage in crucial discussions with Vietnamese leaders, focusing on a spectrum of issues including food security, agricultural cooperation, trade, and broader regional and international concerns.

The visit is expected to strengthen the multifaceted relationship between the Philippines and Vietnam, with President Marcos scheduled to meet with President Thuong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue. These discussions will center on deepening cooperation across various fronts, including trade, investment, and diplomatic relations.

Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Aileen Mendiola-Rau highlighted the President's commitment to ensuring food security, emphasizing the Philippines' reliance on Vietnam as a long-time partner in supporting its rice requirements. The state visit aims to foster agricultural cooperation and reaffirm the Philippines' dedication to ASEAN centrality.

The President will also engage with the Filipino community in Vietnam, acknowledging their role in promoting a positive image of the Philippines in the country. With approximately 7,000 Filipinos residing and working in Vietnam, this interaction aims to underscore the friendly relations between the two nations.

Vietnam holds a special place in the Philippines' foreign relations as its sole strategic partner in the ASEAN region for almost 50 years, dating back to the establishment of bilateral relations in 1976. The countries share cooperation in defense and security, maritime affairs, agriculture, and people-to-people relations. Both nations have set an ambitious goal of boosting bilateral trade to $10 billion in the coming years.
