PCG Adjusts Oil Spill Response Strategy: New Dispersant, More Booms, And Team Efforts
Screengrab from PCG
In a recent update on the maritime oil spill response, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, CG Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan, announced that the spraying of dispersants has been temporarily halted as of July 29, 2024.

This pause is part of a strategic shift to enhance the effectiveness of the response based on expert advice from the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Limited (ITOPF).

The Coast Guard is now switching to a different type of dispersant to better tackle the oil spill. Meanwhile, PCG ships and contracted vessels continue their battle against the oil sheen using water cannons—a technique reminiscent of their successful strategy during the Oriental Mindoro oil spill.

The Coast Guard’s dedicated personnel and PCG Auxiliary (PCGA) members are busy laying out oil spill booms and crafting improvised versions to protect the areas most likely to be affected. Secretary Dong Mendoza, also a PCGA member, has been overseeing the production of these improvised booms. As of the latest update, the PCGA has shipped two truckloads of coco logs and coco peats to the National Capital Region (NCR).

Today, July 30, 2024, the PCGA is set to deliver an additional 1,500 coco logs and 1,500 bags of coco peats to Pampanga, Bulacan, and Bataan. Another PCGA team is collaborating with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resource Office (MENRO)-Ternate and the Coast Guard Station Cavite to create oil spill booms from used clothes.
