PCG Braces For Action Amid Tropical Storm Enteng: Fire Erupts On M/V Kamilla In Navotas Waters
Screengrab from PCG
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) found themselves in the thick of the action today as Tropical Storm Enteng (#EntengPH) made its presence felt. In the early hours, around 7:28 AM, the PCG received an urgent report about an allision in the vicinity waters of Navotas City, which sparked a fire on board a vessel, setting off a dramatic series of events.

It all began when the LCT GT Express, anchored in the same waters, was swept away by the powerful currents brought on by the storm. Unfortunately, it collided with M/V Kamilla, a training ship, causing significant damage to the vessel’s bridge. The strong weather conditions made it impossible for the PCG to deploy their floating asset for rescue.

Just when things couldn’t seem to get any worse, at around 9:19 AM, a fire broke out on board M/V Kamilla. The urgency escalated quickly, and by 10:50 AM, the vessel’s owner informed the PCG that the crew had no choice but to abandon ship. Fortunately, the timely intervention of MTUG Phil Leyte saved the day, as they managed to rescue 17 of the 18 crew members and brought them safely to the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Navotas by 11:15 AM. The BFP Navotas Medical Team was on hand to provide much-needed medical assistance.

The last missing crew member was found and rescued in Barangay Sipac-Almacen and has since been taken to Navotas City Hospital for medical treatment.

As the situation continues to develop, the PCG has deployed BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406) to tackle the fire on M/V Kamilla and is advising the ship's master to file a marine protest at Coast Guard Station Manila.

It's a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers that come with tropical storms, but thanks to the quick response and bravery of the PCG and rescue teams, all lives were saved in this maritime emergency.
