PH And U.S. Strengthen Alliance Amid Rising Challenges In The Indo-Pacific

In a joint press conference held today, Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo of the Philippines and U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken highlighted the robust and evolving partnership between the two countries. The conference, attended by distinguished members of both delegations and the press, underscored the importance of sustained cooperation in addressing pressing regional and global challenges.

Secretary Manalo commenced the conference by expressing gratitude for Secretary Blinken's visit, emphasizing the critical juncture in bilateral relations. Both secretaries engaged in discussions covering a wide array of issues, with a particular focus on defense and security cooperation. They emphasized the need for enhanced coordination to address emerging challenges while upholding the rule of law and promoting peace and prosperity in the region.

Notably, Secretary Manalo thanked the United States for its consistent support amid recent incidents in the South China Sea and reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to managing disputes in accordance with international law, including UNCLOS. Both parties underscored the importance of a strong and capable Philippines as a valuable ally in the region.

Economic collaboration also took center stage, with Secretary Manalo highlighting the recent U.S. Presidential Trade and Investment Mission and expressing appreciation for the Philippines' inclusion in the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment. The discussion emphasized the potential for expanded U.S. investments in Philippine infrastructure projects, contributing to economic growth and regional connectivity.

Secretary Blinken echoed Secretary Manalo's sentiments, emphasizing the unprecedented progress achieved since President Marcos's election and the ambitious trajectory set during President Biden's meeting with President Marcos. The expansion of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) and ongoing cooperation in critical areas such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief underscored the deepening ties between the two nations.

Regarding the South China Sea, Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the United States' commitment to upholding international law and standing with the Philippines against provocative actions. He emphasized the importance of the Mutual Defense Treaty and the shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, underscoring the trilateral cooperation with Japan as a crucial platform for regional stability.

In response to questions from the press, both secretaries reiterated their commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty and emphasized that partnerships and alliances are not directed against any specific country but serve the collective interests of promoting peace, security, and development in the region.
