Using Canada's Dark Vessel Detection technology, the Philippine Coast Guard successfully monitored the movements of the Chinese Coast Guard's massive 165-meter ship, CCG-5901.

On July 1st, the CCG-5901 departed from Hainan and entered the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) the next day. By July 3rd, it had navigated to Ayungin Shoal and subsequently moved to Panganiban Reef. Later that day, the vessel was once again detected heading towards Escoda Shoal. The Philippine Coast Guard's vessel, BRP Teresa Magbanua, radioed the Chinese ship, questioning its intentions and emphasizing the presence within Philippine EEZ boundaries.

For over two consecutive days, the CCG-5901 remained anchored at Escoda Shoal, maintaining a proximity of less than 800 yards from the BRP Teresa Magbanua, positioned on the starboard beam of the PCG vessel.
