In response to China's recent declaration of intent to detain foreigners found trespassing in what it claims as its territorial waters, the Philippine Navy (PN) reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Manila's sovereignty. Commodore Roy Vincent Trinidad, PN spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS), emphasized during a media briefing that despite China's threats, the PN will persist in its mandate to protect Filipino citizens and ensure territorial integrity.

Trinidad highlighted China's utilization of what he termed "lawfare," citing the 2021 Coast Guard Law as the basis for the recent threats. He noted that similar tactics were employed against Japan, South Korea, and will likely target Vietnam in the future. Denouncing China's actions as devoid of legal basis under international law, Trinidad referenced the Arbitral Tribunal's ruling against the Nine-Dash Line, emphasizing the illegality of Chinese Coast Guard actions.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have devised plans and contingency measures to address potential escalations in the situation, Trinidad assured. He reiterated the AFP's readiness, emphasizing their proactive approach to handling various incidents that may arise.

Trinidad linked China's recent orders to the "Atin Ito Coalition" sail mission, which provided supplies to Filipino fishermen in the area. Despite China's focus on Bajo de Masinloc, Trinidad affirmed that the PN's plans for the WPS remain unchanged, with ongoing deployments and proactive measures in place.

Trinidad stressed the PN's adaptability, noting that deployment strategies may adjust accordingly. Despite challenges, he asserted the PN's steadfast presence in the WPS, affirming their commitment to safeguarding Philippine interests in the region.
