In a move aimed at protecting the welfare of Filipino seafarers, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has imposed a ban on crew members embarking on voyages aboard three vessels operating in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The announcement was delivered by DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac during a virtual press conference held this Tuesday afternoon, June 25.

The affected ships identified in the ban are Galaxy, MV Tutor, and MV Transworld Navigator. According to Secretary Cacdac, the decision comes amidst concerns over safety and working conditions for seafarers in the specified regions.

The DMW's directive underscores the importance of ensuring that vessels operating in high-risk areas adhere to international labor and safety standards. Filipino seafarers make up a significant portion of the global maritime workforce, with their contributions vital to the shipping industry worldwide.

This decision follows previous measures implemented by the Philippines to safeguard the rights and welfare of its migrant workers, particularly those in the maritime sector. As global maritime activities continue to evolve, the DMW remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting Filipino seafarers wherever they may be deployed.
