In a thrilling showdown at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan, PLDT shattered Choco Mucho’s hopes of sneaking into the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference quarterfinals. Despite an early spark from the Flying Titans, the High Speed Hitters rallied to claim a 21-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-19 victory, much to the disappointment of Choco Mucho’s dedicated fanbase.

The match started on a high note for Choco Mucho, who edged out PLDT in the opening set with a solid four-point win. The Flying Titans looked poised to make their mark, but PLDT had other plans. Regrouping quickly, the High Speed Hitters took control in the second set, leveling the match and shifting the momentum firmly in their favor.

From that point on, PLDT showcased why they are a team to be reckoned with, dominating the next two sets with a sense of urgency that belied their already secured quarterfinal spot. This win not only solidified their position as the No. 4 seed but also had ripple effects across the league. The Farm Fresh Foxies, thanks to PLDT’s victory, clinched the eighth and final spot in the quarterfinals with a 3-5 record.

After the match, PLDT coach Rald Ricafort acknowledged that the team wasn’t at its best but was determined to bounce back. "Siguro hindi namin best (itong pinakita naming). Pero ‘yun nga, ang daming factors eh. Baka ‘yung pacing, baka alam na sure na kami sa four or five (spot), pero hindi pwede ‘yung ganung laro,” Ricafort remarked. “Bawi kami this next game sa Chery Tiggo. Credits din sa Choco kasi gusto rin talaga nilang manalo.”

For Choco Mucho, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow. After needing a three- or four-set win to secure their quarterfinal spot, the Flying Titans ended their campaign with a disappointing 2-6 record. This marked a significant drop from their impressive runner-up performance in the All-Filipino Conference.

The absence of top scorer Sisi Rondina and ace middle blocker Chery Nunag, who were both loaned to the Alas Pilipinas team, along with the absence of their import, Zoi Faki, due to the flu, further compounded Choco Mucho’s woes.

Despite these setbacks, the Flying Titans showed flashes of brilliance, particularly in the first set where they jumped to an early 10-4 lead. However, PLDT’s resilience and firepower, led by Elena Samoilenko’s 30 points, proved too much to handle. Kiesha Bedonia, Erika Santos, Majoy Baron, and Mika Reyes also contributed significantly to PLDT’s success.

With this victory, PLDT enters the quarterfinals with confidence, eager to bounce back from their tough five-set loss to Petro Gazz last weekend. As for Choco Mucho, their season comes to a premature end, leaving their fans and players reflecting on what could have been.

As the PVL quarterfinals loom, all eyes will now turn to the upcoming matches, starting with Akari’s face-off against Farm Fresh tomorrow. The intensity is sure to escalate, with teams battling it out for a coveted spot in the semifinals.
