PNP Chief's New Game Plan: Targeting The Root Of The Drug Problem, Not Just The Symptoms

In a significant shift in the Philippines' battle against illegal drugs, Philippine National Police (PNP) General Rommel Francisco Marbil announced a fresh strategy that's poised to shake things up.

Instead of zeroing in on street-level pushers and users, the PNP will now focus on dismantling the sources and supply chains of illegal drugs. This recalibrated approach promises to be more effective, with a strong emphasis on human rights and reducing the violence that has often accompanied past anti-drug campaigns.

General Marbil likened the drug problem to the mythical Hydra—a creature that grows more heads each time one is cut off. "In the past, we've been too focused on cutting off the heads. But now, it's time to target the body—the entire supply chain and the sources driving the drug trade," he explained. The aim is clear: go after the real masterminds behind the illegal drug trade, rather than the small-time pushers who are often victims of circumstance themselves.

This new strategy involves ramping up intelligence operations and engaging more deeply with communities to identify and take down drug trafficking networks. "We're honing in on high-value drug personalities and tracking the movement of illegal drugs across the country. These are the real targets—the ones who orchestrate the trade and profit from it," General Marbil emphasized.

One of the most striking aspects of this approach is its focus on minimizing violence. "Our goal is to tackle the drug problem without resorting to bloodshed. By going after the real culprits while protecting the victims, we can make our communities safer and uphold human rights," General Marbil affirmed.

This strategy aligns perfectly with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision for a safer and more secure Philippines. General Marbil sees this recalibrated approach as a crucial step towards that vision, one that not only saves lives but also sets the stage for a brighter future for the nation. "We are committed to addressing the drug issue with compassion, strategy, and a firm adherence to the rule of law," he concluded.
