President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Executive Order No. 74, officially banning Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs), internet gaming, and all other forms of offshore gaming in the country.

This executive order comes as a response to growing concerns raised by various government agencies, including the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC). These organizations have pointed out the alarming issues linked to POGOs such as increased criminal activities, exploitation, and heightened risks of money laundering.

For years, POGOs have been a controversial topic in the Philippines. While they brought revenue and job opportunities, they also stirred up issues that became difficult to ignore. Reports of crimes, human trafficking, and instances of financial irregularities have grown, raising red flags among local and international watchdogs.

The ban is seen as a decisive step to protect the country from these adverse impacts and align with global standards on money laundering and financial security. It’s a significant shift for the Philippines, which once embraced POGOs as a way to boost economic activity. Now, the government is prioritizing security and public welfare, aiming to eliminate the potential threats associated with these offshore operations.

The recent move has sparked a mix of reactions across the nation, with some applauding the government’s stand on protecting the public from the darker sides of the gaming industry.
