President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other nations to stand firm against aggressive maneuvers by Chinese vessels in the South China Sea.

During the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit Leaders’ Retreat in Melbourne, President Marcos asserted the Philippines' unwavering commitment to defending its sovereignty based on international law.

In his address, President Marcos emphasized that the Philippine government will not compromise on its sovereign territory. He urged ASEAN, Australia, and like-minded states to exhibit boldness and a sense of responsibility in upholding the peaceful resolution of disputes and maintaining respect for the rules-based international order.

Acknowledging the support of Australia and other nations, President Marcos thanked them for promoting a rules-based international order grounded in international law.

He underscored the importance of collective and constructive efforts by ASEAN in addressing challenges, framing conflicts not merely as major power rivalries but as direct challenges to the sovereignty of independent states.

President Marcos concluded by emphasizing the global significance of peace and expressing gratitude to Australia for convening the Special Commemorative Summit and the first Leaders’ Retreat for ASEAN this year.

He hopes that the leaders’ meeting will pave the way for constructive dialogue throughout the chairmanship, addressing the region's shared challenges.
