Despite the downpour brought by Severe Tropical Storm Enteng, Malacañan Palace remained warm and welcoming as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. hosted Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski for a courtesy call Wednesday afternoon. The storm may have set the mood outside, but inside the palace, the atmosphere was all about camaraderie and meaningful dialogue.

"Welcome to the Philippines, once again. It’s been too long since your last visit when you were at the Defense Ministry,” President Marcos greeted Sikorski with a smile. The visit marked Sikorski's return to the country after his initial trip back in 2006 when he was Poland’s Defense Minister.

President Marcos expressed deep appreciation for Sikorski's visit, especially given the challenging geopolitical situation in Europe. "So, the importance you have given to the Indo-Pacific is a significant symbol, message to the rest of the world on how we stand together. So, we thank you for that," Marcos said, emphasizing the shared commitment to regional security and cooperation.

Sikorski, in return, expressed his gratitude for the warm reception despite the less-than-ideal weather. He praised President Marcos for his successful diplomatic and security efforts. "As we are very impressed by a number of defense cooperation agreements with the Philippines – and I’m very pleased with the conversations that we have to prioritize,” Sikorski remarked, highlighting the fruitful talks between the two countries.

This visit is particularly special as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Poland, established on September 22, 1973. Over the years, Poland has become a key partner for the Philippines, supplying Black Hawk helicopters and ranking as the country’s 9th top trading partner among European Union countries in 2023. Poland also holds a special place for nearly 3,000 Filipinos who call it their second home.

As the rain continued to pour outside, the discussions inside Malacañan Palace reinforced the strong and growing ties between the Philippines and Poland—proof that not even a storm could dampen the spirits of those working towards a stronger partnership.
