The Philippine sports community is in deep mourning following the tragic and untimely passing of Mervin Guarte, a beloved member of the national team and a decorated Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) multi-medalist. At just 33 years old, Mervin’s life was cut short in a stabbing incident in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, leaving the nation in shock and sorrow.

Mervin Guarte’s athletic achievements are nothing short of remarkable. As a four-time national record holder and a two-time SEA Games gold medalist, Mervin’s dedication to his sport brought immense pride to the Philippines. His victories included a stunning performance in the 2024 Spartan Asia Pacific Championship, where he emerged as the Men's Beast 21 km Champion, as well as gold medals in the 2023 and 2019 SEA Games.

Governor Humerlito "Bonz" Dolor expressed his grief and outrage, sharing, "Paalam, Mervin Guarte! HUSTISYA para kay Mervin Guarte!" He emphasized the provincial government's commitment to seeking justice for Mervin, coordinating closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

Fellow athletes and public figures echoed this sentiment, with national pole vault champion EJ Obiena sharing a heartfelt tribute: "I just learned the devastating news of the shocking death of my friend and National Teammate Kuya Mervin Guarte. May his soul rest in peace, and I am sending my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. What a tragedy. Only 33 years old. This is another poignant reminder to us all, that we must embrace every day as a gift; as tomorrow is never guaranteed."

Mervin's contributions to his country went beyond the track. As an Airman 1st Class in the Philippine Air Force, he served with honor and dedication. Former Calapan City Mayor and now Representative Arnan C. Panaligan highlighted Mervin's dual role as both a national athlete and a soldier: "Rest in Peace Airman 1st Class Mervin Guarte, SEAGAMES gold medalist, taga Lungsod ng Calapan, atletang Pilipino, kawal Pilipino."

The loss of Mervin Guarte is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring impact of his legacy. As the nation grieves, the call for justice grows louder, ensuring that Mervin’s life and contributions will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Mervin Guarte. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
