AFP Chief Tells Troops: Be Ready If Taiwan Crisis Erupts

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) isn’t taking any chances when it comes to regional tensions. AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. has instructed the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) to start mapping out plans in case a Taiwan invasion puts the country in a difficult spot.

Speaking at NOLCOM’s 38th anniversary celebration on April 1, Brawner emphasized the potential impact on the Philippines, especially with around 250,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) currently in Taiwan.

“If something happens to Taiwan, we will inevitably be involved. There are 250,000 OFWs working in Taiwan, and we will have to rescue them,” Brawner stated. “It will be the task of the Northern Luzon Command to be at the front line of that operation.”

While the Philippines has no direct stake in a Taiwan-China conflict, its geographical proximity—particularly Northern Luzon—makes it a key player in any crisis. The AFP is now looking ahead to potential evacuation missions and other contingency measures.

The directive highlights the growing need for preparedness amid rising geopolitical tensions in the region. For now, it’s all about planning—but the message is clear: if trouble brews, the Philippines must be ready to act.
