Looks like big things are brewing for Gilas Pilipinas. The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) just dropped an exciting update: Alfrancis Chua is officially back with the program as Program Director and Team Manager for both the Gilas Pilipinas Youth and Men’s teams.

SBP President Al Panlilio is thrilled with this development. “I am very happy that Alfrancis is back with Gilas. I work well with him, and our only objective is to elevate Philippine basketball,” he shared, emphasizing their shared passion for pushing the sport to greater heights. Panlilio also gave a shoutout to Ramon Ang, San Miguel Corporation's (SMC) Chairman and CEO, for supporting Chua’s return to the national basketball scene.

If you’re familiar with Alfrancis Chua, you know he’s no stranger to success. As SMC Sports Director and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Governor, he’s been the architect behind 15 PBA championships for Ginebra, San Miguel Beer, and Magnolia since 2015. Not to mention, he’s a three-time PBA Executive of the Year awardee (2018, 2021, and 2024).

But it’s not just about trophies and titles. Chua’s leadership as Team Manager for Gilas Pilipinas during the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games helped the team clinch its first basketball gold medal in 60 years—a moment that made every Filipino basketball fan proud.

Gilas Pilipinas Men’s head coach Tim Cone couldn’t be happier to have Chua back in the fold. “It was great having him on the bench motivating the players. He is such a great motivator,” Cone said. He’s looking forward to replicating the magic they had during the Asian Games.

Chua himself is ready to hit the ground running. “I’m happy I’ll be able to help Gilas in this capacity,” he said, expressing gratitude to Ramon Ang for his blessing to take on this role.

The timing couldn’t be better. Chua will join the action as Gilas takes on New Zealand and Hong Kong in the second window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers. With Chua, Coach Tim Cone, and LA Tenorio at the helm, fans are optimistic about what lies ahead for Philippine basketball.

It’s game time, Pilipinas. Let’s bring the heat.
