The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reiterated its stance against recognizing China's Unilateral Fishing Ban in certain areas of the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

This comes amid China's imposition of a four-month fishing moratorium, threatening to apprehend fishermen operating in waters under Philippine jurisdiction starting June 16.

BFAR emphasized that the arrest of Filipino fishermen would constitute a further violation of international law. It pointed out the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), affirming the Philippines' sovereign rights over the WPS.

According to BFAR, approximately 300,000 fishermen ply their trade in the WPS, contributing to 11% of the country's total fish catch. In response, BFAR is bolstering fishing capabilities through its LAYAG WPS project, providing assistance such as fuel, food, and other necessities to fishermen.

"If China persists with this action, it would signify another violation on their part," remarked BFAR Spokesperson Nazario Briguera. "This would entail provocation as it is illegal and lacks any claim under international law. Their intended arrest of our fishermen echoes the sentiments of our President in asserting our sovereign rights in the WPS, firmly anchored in UNCLOS."
