In a dramatic finale at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the Meralco Bolts triumphed over the San Miguel Beermen to capture the PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup, ending a 14-year quest for their first championship.

The Bolts' determination and hard work were on full display as they led for over 47 minutes before securing an 80-78 victory in front of a roaring crowd Sunday night.

Chris Newsome, despite struggling with his shooting throughout the game, delivered the decisive blow with a fall-away jumper over defender Don Trollano, sealing the win with just 3.3 seconds left on the clock. Newsome's heroics came after San Miguel's June Mar Fajardo tied the game with a clutch three-pointer, adding to the nail-biting finish.

Newsome, who was 3-of-16 from the field before his game-winning shot, finished with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. His pivotal performances in Games One, Three, and Four earned him the Finals MVP award, which he graciously shared with his teammates.

"This is for all of us," Newsome said. "We’ve been through so much together, and tonight, we finally made it."

The Bolts' lineup, featuring key contributions from Allein Maliksi, Chris Banchero, Bong Quinto, Raymond Almazan, Brandon Bates, and Cliff Hodge, played a crucial role in overcoming their powerhouse rivals. Their victory not only denied San Miguel an 11-game sweep in the eliminations but also halted the Beermen's bid for a season sweep.

Coach Luigi Trillo and his team celebrated their historic win, finally capturing the Philippine Cup crown after four previous finals losses in the Governors' Cup to the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

Meralco set the tone early, taking a commanding 29-18 lead in the first quarter and extending their advantage to as many as 17 points in the first half. However, the Beermen fought back, and Fajardo's five-point burst in the final 29 seconds tied the game at 78, setting the stage for Newsome's heroics.

Reflecting on the journey, Trillo praised his team’s resilience. "This win is a testament to our perseverance and belief in each other. It’s a moment we’ll cherish forever."
