In a heartfelt appeal during the Senate plenary deliberations on the proposed 2025 national budget, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go championed the restoration of the Office of the Vice President’s (OVP) budget. Go emphasized that cutting its funds would limit the crucial social services the OVP provides, especially for Filipinos facing hardship.

“Maraming naghihirap na nangangailangan ng tulong mula sa gobyerno,” Go said. “Huwag natin ipagkait sa opisinang may mandato na tumulong ang kakayahan nitong makatulong.”

Go explained that the proposed budget for the OVP had been slashed significantly—from PHP 2.026 billion under the National Expenditure Program (NEP) to just PHP 733 million after additional cuts. He urged his colleagues to reconsider, noting that this reduction directly impacts programs that provide immediate support, such as disaster relief and financial assistance.

Why the OVP Budget Matters

According to Go, the OVP's budget cuts threaten programs like:

Magnegosyo Ta Day, which empowers small business owners, especially women, to sustain and grow their ventures.

Educational, Medical, and Burial Assistance Program, which addresses urgent needs for families in crisis.

Disaster Response Program, a lifeline for communities hit by calamities.

“These programs are designed to serve the Filipino people when they need it most. Huwag po nating ipagkait sa kanila ang serbisyong kanilang inaasahan,” Go urged.

A Call for Support

Go reminded the Senate of the Vice President’s role as more than a “spare tire.” “Inihahalal po ang Bise Presidente hindi lamang para umupo sa pwesto,” he said, arguing that the Vice President’s mandate includes addressing the needs of Filipinos, especially in challenging times.

He ended his plea with a simple but powerful request: “Magtulungan na lang po tayo.”

With natural disasters and economic hardships affecting millions, Go stressed that now, more than ever, the government must stand by its people. “Gusto naman po magtrabaho ng ating Bise Presidente. Huwag ho nating pilayan ang gustong magtrabaho,” he added.

The senator’s impassioned call aims to ensure that the OVP has the resources to continue delivering services that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
