Bong Go's Healthcare Push: Top 10 Common Illnesses Get PhilHealth Boost With DOF's Support

Looks like Senator Bong Go’s health crusade is hitting a new milestone. The Department of Finance (DOF) has thrown its support behind a major proposal to include the top 10 common illnesses in the Philippines in the benefit package of PhilHealth. This move, originally championed by Go during the Senate Committee on Health hearings, could be a game-changer for many Filipinos.

The idea? To make healthcare more accessible and affordable for everyone, especially those battling the country's most common diseases. Go’s relentless push over 11 Senate hearings last year finally paid off, with PhilHealth committing in writing to expand its coverage to include these top 10 mortality diseases.

“This is progress,” Go shared enthusiastically. “Finally, we are reaching the goal of expanding healthcare services that are both affordable and reliable for every Filipino.”

For Go, this isn’t just about policy—it’s about real impact. “These changes will lighten the burden of healthcare expenses on our people,” he said. “Planning isn’t enough; we need results because our people’s health is at stake.”

He also emphasized the need for PhilHealth to be more responsive and ensure that every centavo of public money is used meaningfully. “PhilHealth’s funds are the people’s money, and they should be used in ways that truly benefit them,” Go stressed.

As part of his ongoing campaign for health reform, Go urged PhilHealth to continue improving its policies, including revisiting the controversial 24-hour rule, which requires patients to be hospitalized for a day to qualify for coverage. “This rule needs to be re-evaluated and removed,” he insisted.

Known affectionately as “Mr. Malasakit” for his genuine concern for the less fortunate, Go isn’t stopping here. He’s committed to pushing for meaningful health reforms until every Filipino has access to a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.

“We still have a lot to do, but I believe we’re on the right path,” Go concluded. “With the help and support of every Filipino, we are close to achieving broader healthcare services for all.”
