It was a night of pride, gratitude, and celebration as Carlos Yulo, the Paris Olympics double gold medalist, took center stage at the San Miguel Corporation-Philippine Sportswriters Association (SMC-PSA) Awards Night. Held at the historic Manila Hotel’s Centennial Hall, the event honored Yulo as Athlete of the Year—a well-deserved recognition for his stellar achievements in gymnastics.

With fellow Paris Olympians and sports legends in attendance, Yulo was quick to share the spotlight. "Ang panalo ko ay panalo nating lahat," he humbly said, emphasizing the collective effort behind his success. The 24-year-old gymnast made history in the romantic city of Paris by bagging golds in both the floor exercise and vault events, marking a memorable milestone in the Philippines’ Olympic journey.

The evening was filled with heartfelt moments as Yulo thanked those who played pivotal roles in his journey. From Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president Cynthia Carrion, who received the National Sports Association of the Year award, to his coach Aldrin Castaneda, and even his girlfriend Chloe San Jose, who he credited for supporting his mental health, Yulo made sure everyone felt appreciated. “Maraming maraming salamat sa pag-aalaga sa aking mental health,” he said with a smile.

Yulo’s gratitude extended to his fellow Olympians, whose achievements continue to inspire him. “Alam ko ang ating pinagdaanan at saludo ako sa achievements natin,” he shared, acknowledging boxing bronze medalists Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, among others.

In his speech, Yulo reflected on the challenges and triumphs that defined his career. "Sa lahat ng paghihirap ko, lahat ng pagod, sobrang worth it talaga na nakamit ko ang tagumpay kasama ang mga mahal ko sa buhay," he said, his words resonating with the audience.

The star-studded event, co-presented by ArenaPlus with Cignal and MediaQuest, also celebrated Olympians from 1964 to 2024, who were given Special Awards. Former basketball star and senator Freddie Webb delivered an emotional keynote speech, sharing his own Olympic memories. "Masarap maging Olympian," the 82-year-old said, his words echoing the shared pride of every athlete in the room.

As Yulo looks ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, he made a heartfelt plea to his fans: “Sana po tuloy-tuloy ang suporta ninyo, at ipagdasal niyo ako.” With his talent, dedication, and the unwavering support of his community, there’s no doubt that Yulo will continue to make the country proud.
