EDSA Busway: Still The King Of Metro Manila's Road Transport?
FILE
If you’ve been commuting along EDSA, chances are you’ve hopped on the EDSA Busway at least once. And according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), this dedicated bus lane is still Metro Manila’s most efficient public road transport system.

Just how efficient? In 2024 alone, over 63 million commuters took advantage of the EDSA Busway. And in just January 2025, it has already served more than 5.5 million passengers—an average of 177,000 riders daily. That’s a lot of people getting to their destinations faster, safer, and with fewer headaches!

With 23 stations running 24/7, the EDSA Busway has become a crucial part of the city’s move toward a more progressive public transportation system. But the government isn’t stopping there. Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista is currently waiting for the results of a feasibility study to explore ways to improve the busway even further. The plan? Bring in private sector expertise and funding to enhance commuter experience without making EDSA traffic any worse.

Meanwhile, there’s also a hot debate on whether to open bike lanes to motorcycles. Sec. Bautista says this needs careful study—because while more road space might help some, it could also put cyclists at risk.

For now, the EDSA Busway remains a lifeline for millions of commuters. But with possible changes on the horizon, the big question is: How much better can it get?
