Big changes are coming for Skype users. Microsoft has just announced that Skype will be retired in May 2025, marking the end of an era for the beloved communication app. But don’t worry—Microsoft isn’t leaving users hanging. Instead, they’re making the transition as smooth as possible by moving everything over to Microsoft Teams (free).

Why the Change?

Let’s be real—the way we communicate has evolved. From text messages to video calls, technology keeps changing how we connect. Microsoft sees Teams as the future of communication, combining chat, video calls, file sharing, meetings, and even community building—all in one place.

And here’s the kicker: hundreds of millions of people are already using Teams for work, school, and personal connections. In fact, in just the past two years, the number of minutes spent in Teams meetings by everyday users has quadrupled.

What Happens to Skype Users?

If you’re a longtime Skype user, you’ve got a few options before the service officially shuts down on May 5, 2025:

1. Move to Microsoft Teams (for free)

Microsoft is making it super easy—soon, you’ll be able to log into Teams using your Skype credentials. All your chats and contacts will be there, ready to go. Plus, during the transition period, Skype and Teams users can still message and call each other across both platforms.

2. Export Your Skype Data

Not ready to switch? You can export all your chats, contacts, and call history before the shutdown.

What About Skype’s Paid Features?

If you use Skype Credit or subscriptions for international and domestic calls, here’s what you need to know:

No new subscriptions will be available—but if you already have one, you can keep using it until your next renewal period.

After May 2025, Skype’s Dial Pad will still be available for paid users on the Skype web portal and inside Teams.

How to Get Started with Teams

If you’re ready to make the switch, here’s how to move to Teams today:

1. Download Microsoft Teams here.
2. Log in with your Skype account (your chats and contacts will carry over).
3. Start using Teams—it’s like Skype, but with even more features!

Microsoft is providing a step-by-step guide to help with the transition, so switching over should be smooth and hassle-free.

The End of an Era

Skype has been a staple of online communication for over 20 years, bringing people together across the globe. While saying goodbye might feel bittersweet, Microsoft is confident that Teams is the future—and they’re ready to support users every step of the way.

So, are you making the move to Teams? The clock is ticking—Skype shuts down in less than a year!
