Let’s be real—body image has always been a touchy subject, but a new survey shows just how deeply it’s affecting Filipinos’ mental health. According to a study by Arkipelago Analytics, a significant number of Filipinos say their body image struggles are taking a toll on their wellbeing, with young adults feeling it the most.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

The survey, conducted in February 2025, found that over half (52%) of Filipinos aged 18–24 say their body image negatively impacts their lives—6% higher than the global average for this age group. The trend continues with 41% of 25–34-year-olds and 35% of those aged 35–44 also reporting struggles. Even in older age groups, body image remains a concern, though the numbers gradually decrease with age.

And here’s the kicker: Most respondents feel their body image has gotten worse compared to last year. Yep, the pressure is mounting.

What’s the Impact?

So, how exactly is this playing out in people’s lives? The survey found that negative body image is linked to:

Low self-esteem – Feeling uncomfortable in one’s own skin is leading to serious confidence issues.

Increased stress and anxiety – The pressure to look a certain way isn’t just a passing worry—it’s affecting mental health.

Depression and low mood – Constant dissatisfaction with one’s body can take a toll on overall happiness.

Social withdrawal – Many people reported skipping events or avoiding social situations because of how they feel about their appearance.

Relationship struggles – When self-perception takes a hit, it can affect how people interact with partners, friends, and even family.

Unhealthy eating habits – Some respondents admitted to developing disordered eating patterns as a way to cope.

What’s Driving the Pressure?

According to Arkipelago Analytics founder Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo, the rapid rise of social media, evolving beauty standards, and cultural expectations all play a role. “Body image challenges remain a critical concern for Filipinos of different backgrounds, but our findings indicate that the youngest age groups are especially susceptible,” she explains.

Where Do We Go from Here?

With more Filipinos struggling with body image than ever, experts are calling for more open conversations about self-acceptance, realistic beauty standards, and mental health support. After all, feeling good about yourself shouldn’t be based on society’s ever-changing ideals—it should be about embracing who you are, inside and out.
