Filipino pole vaulter and Olympian EJ Obiena achieved a remarkable victory at the 6th Irena Szewinska Memorial in Bydgoszcz, Poland, clearing a season-best 5.97 meters. This performance reinforces his standing as the world’s No. 3 pole vaulter.

Obiena outperformed Greek athlete Emmanouil Karalis, who secured second place with a 5.92-meter vault, and Poland's Piotr Lisek, who finished third with 5.75 meters.

In an Instagram post, Obiena expressed his joy, stating, “5.97m for the 馃 here in Bydgoszcz.” He also shared gratitude for being part of the event, reminiscing about his initial participation in 2017, thanks to an invitation from hometown legend Pawel Wojciechowski.

The competition was notable not only for Obiena’s victory but also for Karalis setting a new national record for Greece. Obiena congratulated Karalis on this achievement, reflecting the camaraderie and high spirits of the event.

Obiena will next compete at the Czes艂aw Cybulski Memorial in Poznan, Poland, on June 23. His recent triumph is a promising precursor as he prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympics, set to take place from July 26 to August 11.

In his Instagram post, Obiena concluded with enthusiasm for his upcoming challenge: “Now some much-needed rest and we go again in Poznan on the 23rd!!!”
